AS "from the early days of RIPE" because he couldn't be bothered to pay
50 EUR/year "just to have it" when it wasn't used any longer (of course
I could have *afforded* it, but the nuisance factor was way too high).

Well, as I said, I have been working with some customers on M&As
or transfers where they have taken over networks/IP blocks and did
not need the ASNs. Some of those ASNs have been returned.<br>
So, it does work, and not only if a 50E/year fee is added to each
ASN. Some still do the right thing while others will see the value
in a finite number.<br>

Nowadays, with the experience of IPv4, everyone will look at numbers
at a method to making money, especially if these numbers finite and
depleted. I doubt holders of ASNs will return them to the NCC if

PS: the brokerage business has changed how I see things. two years
ago I would have said: hey, it's not use, return it, do the right
thing; now I'm saying: hey, there's money to be made.<br>
